Silverware Date: 2011-03-21
Admire the intricate designs of Cambodian silverware on Red Wrappings. Silverware made in Cambodia are among the finest and most intricate in the world. Silverworks in Cambodia dates back to the Khmer empire, between the 9th to 15th century, reaching its peak during the 11th century. Silver was used during this time by royalty and the upper class for religious ceremonies, funerals and other rituals. It was during this era that silversmiths emerged south of the ancient royal port of Oudong which was the capital of Cambodia, and they were supported by the Cambodian Royal Palace. In 1866, King Norodom moved the Royal Palace to Phnom Penh which then became the official capital of Cambodia a year later.
Today, silversmiths in Cambodia who survived the Pol Pot regime continue to practice their skills, using traditional tools that have remained relatively unchanged. While the rest of the world has succumbed to mechanisation for commercialisation, these artisans continue to hand produce their art form of detailed silverworks.
All the Cambodian silver plated homewares on Red Wrappings all individually handmade. Each piece is unique. No two pieces are the same. When you select one of these beautiful items, you are choosing a piece of art created by one of these skilled Cambodian silversmith artisans who have painstakingly handpressed mixtures of copper and bronze into sheets and styled them according to their indivdual creativity and workmanship, involving hours of labour.
